The intent of this studio was to design a series of benches that would be built for the Instructional Center on Georgia Tech campus. Three benches were designed using photogrammetry of fabric draped over boxes. The design was motivated by the desire to use the limited wood supply from the GT TreeCycling program conservatively so as not to produce any wasted material. By using a steel frame for structure, the wood could be strategically and minimally used to create a fluid form akin to fabric draping over the angular and rigid steel. The aim was to create a stark contrast between the two materials and explore the unique properties and material abilities. Photographs shown below are a full scale prototype that we fabricated.
